Game 31: New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles

The Yankees will look to rebound from a poor pitching performance, but may have to do it without Joba Chamberlain.

Chamberlain (1-1, 3.77 ERA) may be scratched from today's start for a broke a blood vessel in his thumb. The injury occurred when the pitcher threw batting practice Saturday, leaving his status for today's start in jeopardy.

Yankees trained Gene Monahan told manager Joe Girardi he didn't believe the injury would keep Chamberlain from starting today, but the Yankees have tabbed Alfredo Aceves as the emergency starter.

In his last start, Chamberlain pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and six hits in a loss against the Boston Red Sox. The righty struck out 12, a career high. Chamberlain is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and a .167 opponents' batting average in one start and nine relief appearances against the O's.

The Orioles will send out rookie Koji Uehara (2-3, 4.42 ERA), who is 0-3 in his last four starts. The rookie beat the Yankees in his fist major league start, allowing a run and five hits in five innings.

In his last start, Uehara gave up three runs and seven hits while striking out a career-high eight batter in 6 2/3 innings in a loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.

And now, your starting lineup:
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Swisher RF
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Cervelli C

And on the mound (for right now), the hard-throwing right hander, Joba Chamberlain.

The Yankees got shelled last night, but if Joba showed anything in his last start, it's that he can keep other teams in check. He had every pitch working last week and, if he can stay economical, he can give the Yankees a solid start. Game time is 1:05, and you can catch all the action on YES.

With their loss last night, the Yankees fell to 14-15 and only sit 1 1/2 games over the Orioles in the standings. The team has lost of six of their last seven games, while Baltimore has won four of their last five.
