Who Should Get The Call Up?

The Yankees are currently mired in a five-game skid, their longest losing streak since 2007. The team's bullpen is hit and miss (more miss and giving up plenty of hits), and their hitters are coming up empty in big situations (numbers with RISP = terrible). Their play has been terrible, and it seems their injury list grows daily. Last night, the Yankees added another casualty to their list: Jose Molina. The backup catcher left with a strained quad and, according to Pete Abraham at LoHud, will go to the DL.

So the Yankees face a question - who do they bring up to replace Molina?

The current catchers in Triple A are Chris Stewart and Kevin Cash. Cash has spent significant time on the DL with a shoulder injury, but has played in the last seven games. He's a defensive catcher, and he's had the most major league experience out of the crop of catchers remaining in the Yankees farm system. I don't see any reason why the Yankees shouldn't bring him up. No offense to Cervelli, but he was miserable in Double A ball this year. Here are his stats:

.190 AVG/2 HR/7 RBI/.266 OBP in 16 games.

Now, I'm not suggesting Cash comes in and lights the league on fire. But I'm more willing to give a guy whose had some success at the major league level a shot over Cervelli. Cervelli will make a good backup for now, but that's where he should be - back up.

To make one of these moves, the Yankees are going to have to open up a spot on the 40 man roster. See ya later, Angel Berroa. The guy hasn't done much with the Yankees and was an insurance policy just in case something happened. But with the way Ramiro Pena has been playing, I think the Yankees feel they can DFA Berroa. If someone else picks him up, then best of luck to him. I have a feeling he'll be back in Scranton.
